Christian High School: A Legacy of Education, Service and Excellence Since 1898

Christian High School (CHS) stands as an institution with a remarkable educational legacy dating back to 1898. Founded by the German Basel Missionaries with the noble motto “Service to Mankind,” the school has played an important role in providing quality education while nurturing discipline, character, leadership and service-mindedness among generations of students.

From its humble beginning with just 36 students and 8 teachers, Christian High School has grown into an institution respected for its rich history, dedicated teachers and commitment to the overall development of students.

A Historic Beginning in 1898

Christian High School was established in 1898 through the efforts of the German Basel Missionaries. Their vision went beyond classroom education. They believed that education should empower individuals to contribute positively to society.

The school began with 36 students and 8 teachers. Within a decade, the institution witnessed impressive growth, with the student strength reaching 267 by 1907. In 1909, the school received permanent recognition from the Education Department, marking an important milestone in its journey.

Late Rev. A. Brash served as the first manager of the school, while Late M. Venkatesh Prabhu became its first Headmaster.

Building a Strong Educational Foundation

Between 1918 and 1935, under the leadership of Late S. E. Salis, the school expanded significantly. As the number of students increased to 605, with 24 teachers, new classrooms were constructed to meet the growing needs of the institution.

Following his retirement, Rev. Mark Sanjeeva Rao served as Headmaster until 1938. Between 1938 and 1942, Late S. J. Kaundinya contributed significantly to strengthening the administration and functioning of the school.

The school’s Golden Jubilee was celebrated in a grand manner during the tenure of Late A. S. Carot, who is remembered for his contribution to the all-round development of Christian High School.

Education Beyond the Classroom

Christian High School has always believed that education should prepare students for life as well as examinations. This vision became particularly evident during the tenure of Late S. N. Mathias, who served from 1949 to 1957.

During this period, Secretarial and Engineering courses were introduced to provide students with industrial and practical training. These initiatives reflected the school’s commitment to equipping young people with knowledge and skills relevant to the changing world.

Sports also received considerable attention during the tenure of Late A. Joshua, who served as Headmaster from 1957 to 1964. His period saw notable progress in the field of sports and extracurricular activities.

A Period of Expansion and Innovation

In 1964, Late L. B. Amanna took charge as Headmaster. His tenure brought further development to the institution.

An open-air stage and Kavi Muddanna Mandira were constructed, adding valuable spaces for cultural and educational activities. The school’s Platinum Jubilee was also celebrated in a grand manner.

One of the important educational developments during this period was the introduction of English-medium classes from Standard 1 to Standard 7. The Platinum Jubilee Hall was subsequently constructed above the Muddanna Mandira, creating another important facility for the school community.

After Late L. B. Amanna, Late S. R. Chambers served as Headmaster from 1974 to 1976.

Academic Excellence and Student Achievements

The tenure of Late W. A. Karkada marked another significant chapter in the school’s history. Christian High School made notable progress, particularly in academic performance.

Students began securing ranks in the SSLC examinations, bringing recognition and pride to the institution. During this period, one of the school’s students achieved second rank in the SSLC Public Examination, highlighting the academic potential nurtured by CHS.

Between 1995 and 1997, Sri E. D. Sadananda served as Headmaster.

Embracing Computer Education

In 1997, Sri M. V. Kumar took charge as Headmaster and continued the school’s tradition of progress and academic excellence.

During his tenure, computer education was introduced, helping students become familiar with emerging technology and preparing them for a rapidly changing world. The school also secured 6th rank during this period, further enhancing its academic reputation.

In 2003, Late K. R. Daya Rao served as Headmaster for one year. Subsequently, Sri Vijay Kumar served as Headmaster and arranged a free school bus facility for the benefit of students, making education more accessible to the school community.

The First Lady Headmaster and the Strength of Alumni

In 2007, Helen V. Salins took charge as Headmistress, becoming the first lady Headmistress of Christian High School.

Her tenure brought a renewed connection between the school and its former students. She established an Old Students’ Association, which played an important role in supporting the institution.

The association contributed generously towards the tuition fees of deserving students and supported the school by providing essential educational materials such as notebooks, school bags and umbrellas. Old students also participated in renovation and improvement works, demonstrating the strong bond between CHS and its alumni.

Dedicated Leadership and Service

Today, Mrs. Rekha K. M. is serving as the In-charge Headmistress of the school. Over the years, several distinguished individuals have contributed to the administration and development of the institution.

Susheel Bangera and Stephen V. Kumar have served as correspondents of the school. The teaching staff, from the institution’s early years to the present day, have continued to serve with dedication and commitment.

At present, Sri Vincent Palana serves as the Treasurer, while Sri Moses Jayasekhar serves as the Secretary of the school management.

The institution has also received consistent support from the bishops, who have contributed to the development and functioning of the school throughout its long history.

A Legacy That Continues

The story of Christian High School is more than a timeline of dates and achievements. It is a story of service, dedication, educational transformation and community involvement.

From 36 students in 1898 to generations of students who have gone on to pursue diverse careers and contribute to society, CHS has remained committed to its founding spirit of “Service to Mankind.”

Its history reflects the contributions of dedicated managers, headmasters, teachers, students, alumni and members of the school management. Each generation has added something valuable to the institution while preserving the principles on which it was founded.

With its rich heritage, commitment to academics, emphasis on extracurricular activities, technological progress and strong alumni network, Christian High School continues to carry forward a legacy of education and service.

As the institution looks towards the future, its historic foundation remains a source of strength—reminding every generation that true education is not simply about acquiring knowledge, but about developing responsible, confident and compassionate individuals who can make a meaningful contribution to society.
