In 1874, the ground floor of St. Ann’s main school building was constructed for the ever increasing number of pupils that sought admission. The girls were thence forward prepared for a Departmental examination and the school was placed under the salary grant system.

It will be in place here to quote the letter of recommendation of the Education Department issued by the First Inspector of Schools Mr.L.Gaithwaite after his inspection dated April 22, 1878. “The St.Ann’s Girls School has always been favourably reported on by me. Its usefulness is unquestionable and is well thought of by all classes of the community in Mangaluru. The nuns who teach on the staff have set a most laudable example by passing the literary test for a Teachers certificate”.

In the meantime the South Kanara mission passed into the hands of the Jesuits, the worldwide reputed educationaists. The Rev. Fr. Urban Stein S.J. from St.Mary’s College, Bombay was appointed Manager of St.Ann’s Girls High School in January 1879.

During the period 1884-1888 the institution was raised to the status of as a High School, Governament recognition was secured and the school was brought in line with other institutions of the kind in the Presidency. At the first Matriculation Examination Louisa Coelho won the Krupabhai Sathynathan Gold Medal for ranking first in the Presidency.

No doubt the year 1885 ushered in an era of development in the quality and quantity of work of St.Ann’s High School, as is evident by Mr.Marsden’s inspection report dated July 12, 1886. “I have always noticed that accuracy and method were conspicuous in all the written exercises. The English spoken in this school is better, both as to pronunciation and idiom, than I have heard in any school in South Kanara. The Catholics have a large and flourishing institution which has just reached the grade of a High School, for the higher education of their girls, in addition to a primary school. Generally in discipline and tone the school could not do better. I have not seen another school so well managed, not one where all the subjects were also well taught as at St.Ann’s. It really forms a Training school for all the other Catholic girls schools on the West Coast.”

In 1885 St.Ann’s Kanarese school was opened and in 1887 shifted to Dongerkery and renamed “The Victoria Caste Girl’s School”.

St. Ann’s High School continued to grow under the matchless leadership of Mother Aloysia. A good few years later a High School building was constructed. The ground floor consisted of a porch, a training class and a model school of Forms I,II,III – the first floor I to VI . The first Junior Intermediate class was started in a small cottage on the St. Ann’s Campus in 1920, which proved to be the cradle of St.Agnes College.In 1921 came an unexpected turn in the tide of affairs at St.Ann’s . The three higher classes viz. Form IV, V and VI were shifted to St. Agnes, Bendore to ensure a perennial flow of students for the newly opened St.Agnes College. St. Ann’s was mute with pain over its loss. In reality though, it was seed time and the blossom appeared in 1934 when the middle school with its excellent standard was gladly upgraded into St.Ann’s Girls High School.

In 1961, a unique honour was conferred on the most outstanding schools in the district and St.Ann’s being considered one among them was upgraded into a Higher Secondary School. Hence Std.X was introduced in 1964.

To adjust to the new social, political and economic changes, women’s education in the school contributed its share. Owing to the increasing number of pupils and receipt of grants, a Home Science Course took up the training of young women in the art of housekeeping and finer graces of women. The year 1966 saw some of the High School students occupy the Pierce Leslie Bungalow and the Home Science department, in the crèche, as the crowded classes were crying for more room.

Contributing to the work of our pioneers, the parents of the pupils joined in. In the year 1959, the Parent Teachers Association of St.Ann’s High School was started with the aim of coordinating the efforts of parents and teachers in the cause of students welfare.

In 1976, a School Complex Programme was started to upgrade resource matter, demonstrate experiments and guide the staff members of ten neighboring primary schools and it functioned successfully till the new education policy came into force.

When the four walls of the classroom could not hold the ever increasing numbers and the repairs of the old school building proved uneconomic, the PTA of the school supported the idea of construction of a new school building. For this purpose a separate seed fund was started in the year 1988.

In June 2013 the winds of change swept through the St.Ann’s Campus as the new Carmel CBSE school was started. The P.U.C occupied the High School building as it had all the facilities available and St.Ann’s High School was shifted to the Carmel School main building with the addition of a second floor and the 2nd floor of the T.T.I block.

The students of St.Ann’s High School have always kept up to their school motto ‘Excelsior’ and have striven for excellence in the academic field.
